General Information
- Classification - 10th edition — single class filing. Class 33, alcoholic goods in class 32, and pork meat in class 29 cannot be registered
- Search - Possible for word marks ONLY
- Examination - Formality and substantive
- Opposition period - 30 days from last publication date
- Extension of time - Not possible for filing oppositions, counter oppositions, and responding to office actions
- Term of protection - 10 years from filing date and renewable for similar periods
- Use - Mark is vulnerable to cancellation action by interested parties if there is no bona fide use of the mark for a period of 5 consecutive years from registration date
Filing Requirements
- Power of Attorney duly legalized by the U.A.E. Consulate. Should be filed along with the application.
- In case of claiming priority, a certified copy of the corresponding home or foreign application.

Patents
General Information
- Search - Searches may be done by title, patentee name and PCT number at the patent office
- Examination - Formality, novelty, inventiveness, industrial applicability, unity and compliance
- Publication - Applications are published upon grant
- Opposition period - 60 days from publication in the IP Bulletin issued by the Patent Office after acceptance
- Annuities - Paid annually on the anniversary of the international filing date, can also be paid on pending applications. 6 months grace period is allowed for late payment and the last 3 months of which are subject to a penalty. Restoration is applicable after the grace period.
- Term of protection - 20 years from filing date and 10 years from filing date for utility model

Industrial designs
General Information
- Term of protection - 10 years from filing date
- Examination - Formality, novelty, and industrial applicability
- 20 drawings - are allowed provided they are interrelated
- Annuities - Are paid annually on the anniversary of the filing date. A 6 months grace period is allowed for late payment and the last 3 months of which are subject to a penalty. Restoration is applicable after the grace period.
- Renewal - Not possible

- Extract for the Commercial Register or from the Memorandum of Association if the applicant is a company or body corporate duly legalized by the UAE Consulate.
- Two copies of the model of design if it is two-dimensional, or two copies of each view thereof if it is three-dimensional.
- Deed of assignment signed by the inventor if the applicant is not the inventor duly legalized by the UAE Consulate.
- Certified copy of the priority document (in case convention priority is to be claimed).
